How Good A Listener are You?

Person listening.

Before we get to the heart of the blog, the idea of this blog came from me lifting weights last week. As I bent over to pick up the kettlebell, (love these!) I felt my back tweak a bit. For once in my 55 years I actually listened to my body and stopped. Turns out an old dog can learn new tricks, don’t tell my wife! On with the blog …..

Listen to Your Body Before It Starts Shouting at You

Have you ever found yourself limping down the street wondering when a block felt like a mile, only to realize you’ve been ignoring your body’s desperate cries for help? We’ve all been there. You tweak your back lifting a couch, and instead of resting, you decide to “walk it off.” Next thing you know, you’re in full-blown ouch mode.

Let’s be real: your body is not trying to ruin your day. It’s trying to tell you something important before things go from “mildly annoying” to “why did I think moving that couch by myself was a good idea?”

It Starts as a Whisper

Your body is like that friend who gently taps you on the shoulder at the party, saying, “Hey, buddy, maybe slow down on the karaoke?” That twinge in your neck? That tightness in your low back? Those little hints are your body’s polite way of saying, “Hey, something’s off here.”

Unfortunately, we are experts at ignoring these polite requests. We treat our bodies like a car with the check engine light on: “Oh, that’s probably nothing… let’s just keep driving!”

When You Ignore It, It Gets Louder

Here’s the thing, if you don’t listen to those polite whispers, those whispers turn into shouts, and real quick. That dull ache becomes a stabbing pain. That tension in your shoulders turns into a full-blown stress party with your neck and upper back as the hosts. Suddenly, you’re stuck on the couch binging Netflix, not because you want to, but because you physically can’t move.

The “Hero” Mentality

Let’s talk about that heroic streak many of us have. You know, the one that says, “It’s just a little pain. No biggie! I can push through it.” News flash: your spine does not care about your plans to deadlift your personal record or clean out the garage.

What is the old expression; Person made plan and God laughed!

Ignoring pain doesn’t make you a superhero, it makes you a cautionary tale. The real superhero move? Listening to your body’s warning signals before they turn into a full-blown five alarm fire.

So, What Does Listening Look Like?

  • Rest when you’re sore: Not rocket science, I know. But you’d be surprised how many people forget that “rest” isn’t just for vacations and Sundays.
  • Stretch and move gently: Your body loves gentle movement. If your muscles are tight, a little stretching goes a long way.
  • See someone who can help: Just call me, you don’t have to overthink this. Massage and acupuncture can work well here too.
  • Hydrate and eat well: Because yes, even your water intake can affect how your muscles and joints feel. (Water: it’s like oil for your squeaky body parts.)

Chiropractic Care: Your Body’s Best Friend

This is a chiropractor. Chiropractors are like your body’s personal interpreters. They know how to listen to what your spine is saying and help it feel better. So if your body’s been trying to get your attention with all sorts of creaks, cracks, and pops, a quick chiropractic tune-up might be just what the doctor ordered.

The Moral of the Story

Your body is not the enemy, it’s your loyal partner. It’s trying to keep you upright and moving, even when you’re treating it like a rental car. The next time you feel that little twinge or ache, pause. Ask your body what it needs.

Listening to your body doesn’t make you weak, it makes you wise. Because trust me, ignoring those early warning signs will only land you in more pain, more frustration, and a lot more time stuck on the couch.

So here’s to listening, to slowing down, and to making sure your body doesn’t have to shout to be heard. Your spine will thank you, and so will your future self, who will be dancing at parties instead of limping home like Captain Hook.
