The Most Valuable Word With Health Is Yes!

Ocean Sand with the word yes inscribed in it.

The Most Valuable Word in Health Isn't "Pain." It's "Yes."

By Dr. Kevin Harrington, Harrington Family Chiropractic | Concord, MA

If you asked most people why they want to be healthier, you’d probably hear answers like:

  • “I want to lose weight.”
  • “I don’t want my back to hurt.”
  • “I need more energy.”
  • “I should exercise more.”

Those are all reasonable goals.

But I don’t think they’re the real goal.

After nearly 30 years of caring for patients, I’ve come to believe that the most valuable word in health isn’t pain.

It’s yes.

Health Gives You The Ability To Say Yes

Yes to playing with your kids after work.

Yes to coaching another hockey season.

Yes to eighteen holes of golf.

Yes to a long walk with your spouse.

Yes to carrying your grandchild.

Yes to traveling without worrying whether your back will hold up.

Yes to working in the garden because you enjoy it—not because you’re afraid of what it might do to your body.

That’s what health buys you.

It buys you options.

It buys you freedom.

It buys you experiences.

Pain Is Usually Just the Invitation

Most people don’t walk into a chiropractor’s office because everything feels great.

They come because something hurts.

That’s normal.

Pain gets your attention.

But I don’t believe pain relief is the finish line.

I believe it’s the starting line.

Once pain begins to improve, we get to ask a much better question:

What do you want your body to let you say yes to again?

That’s a very different conversation than simply asking where it hurts.

Becoming a Health Millionaire

People understand how financial wealth works.

You don’t become a millionaire by making one giant deposit.

You become wealthy by making thousands of small deposits that compound over time.

Health works exactly the same way.

Every healthy decision is a deposit.

A 10-minute walk after dinner.

A good night’s sleep.

Choosing water instead of another soda.

Strength training.

Managing stress.

Eating a little more protein.

Getting adjusted when your body isn’t moving the way it should.

None of those decisions seem life-changing by themselves.

But together?

They compound.

Eventually, you become wealthy in something far more valuable than money.

You become wealthy in health.

The Best Time to Invest Is Today

People often ask me what the secret to staying healthy is.

They’re usually expecting a complicated answer.

There isn’t one.

The healthiest people I know simply keep making deposits.

Not perfect deposits.

Consistent deposits.

Some days you’ll exercise.

Some days you won’t.

Some meals will be great.

Some won’t.

That’s okay.

Health isn’t built by perfection.

It’s built by consistency.

What Are You Investing For?

Here’s a question I’d love for you to think about this week:

What are you hoping your body will let you say yes to five years from now?

Ten years from now?

Thirty years from now?

Write it down.

Maybe it’s hiking with your spouse.

Maybe it’s skiing.

Maybe it’s playing catch with your grandchildren.

Maybe it’s simply getting up off the floor without thinking twice about it.

Whatever it is, remember this:

Every healthy choice you make today is helping you buy that future.

My Philosophy

At Harrington Family Chiropractic, my goal has never been to simply help people hurt less.

My goal is to help people live more.

To help them keep saying yes to the people, places, and experiences that make life meaningful.

Because one day someone you love is going to ask:

“Do you want to go?”

My hope is that your answer is…

Yes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "Built for 80" mean?

Built for 80 is the idea that the small health decisions you make today determine how active, capable, and independent you’ll be later in life. It’s not about simply living longer, it’s about living better.

Why is saying "yes" so important to health?

Good health creates freedom. It allows you to participate in the activities, relationships, and experiences that matter most instead of avoiding them because your body can’t keep up.

Can small health habits really make a difference?

Absolutely. Just like money grows through compound interest, healthy habits compound over time. Small, consistent actions often produce bigger long-term results than short bursts of intense effort.

Is chiropractic only for pain relief?

Pain often brings people into the office, but chiropractic care can also help support healthy movement and function. Many people choose ongoing care because they want to stay active and continue doing the things they love.

What's the best first health deposit I can make today?

Start with something simple that you’ll actually do. A 10-minute walk after dinner, drinking an extra glass of water, or getting to bed a little earlier are all meaningful deposits into your long-term health account.
