Sleep Is the Ultimate Health Hack
When we talk about the #builtfor80 lifestyle, you have to get sleep right.
If there was a magic pill that boosted your brain, repaired your body, balanced your mood, and even helped you live longer, you’d take it, right? Well, it already exists. It’s called sleep. The problem is, most people treat sleep like a luxury instead of a necessity. The truth? Quality sleep is one of the most powerful tools you have for your overall health.
Why Sleep Matters
When you skimp on sleep, you’re not just tired, you’re slowing down your immune system, raising your risk for heart disease, messing with your hormones, and setting yourself up for weight gain and poor mental performance. On the flip side, getting enough quality rest improves memory, reaction time, mood, metabolism, and muscle recovery. For athletes, business professionals, parents, basically everyone, sleep is the foundation that everything else sits on.
But not all sleep is created equal. Your body cycles through different stages each night, and each stage plays a different role in keeping you healthy.
The Four Stages of Sleep
Your sleep is divided into two main types: Non-REM (NREM) sleep and REM sleep, and within those, four distinct stages.
Stage 1 Light Sleep (NREM)
This is the dozing-off phase; usually just a few minutes. Your muscles relax, heart rate slows, and brain activity begins to dip. If someone wakes you up here, you might not even realize you were asleep. It’s short, but it’s the gateway to deeper rest.
Stage 2 Deeper Light Sleep (NREM)
Now you’re in a true sleep state. Your body temperature drops, your breathing slows even more, and your brain starts producing sleep spindles—quick bursts of activity that help with memory and learning. You’ll spend about half your total night in Stage 2, so it’s critical for mental sharpness.
Stage 3 Deep Sleep (NREM)
This is where the magic happens for your body. Also called “slow-wave” sleep, this stage is key for physical recovery, muscle repair, immune system strengthening, and the release of growth hormone. If you’re an athlete or you hit the gym hard, Stage 3 is where your body rebuilds. It’s also the hardest stage to wake someone from.
Stage 4 REM Sleep
REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement, and this is the stage where your brain lights up like you’re awake. Most of your vivid dreaming happens here. REM is essential for emotional processing, problem solving, and creativity. Your brain is busy consolidating memories, making connections, and doing mental housekeeping.
How Much Sleep Do You Really Need?
Most adults need 7–9 hours a night. But it’s not just about hours, it’s about getting enough of each stage. Bad habits like staying up late on screens, drinking caffeine too late, or inconsistent bedtimes can mess up your cycle.
The Bottom Line
Think of sleep as your body’s nightly tune-up. You wouldn’t drive your car for years without maintenance, so don’t run your body into the ground without giving it the rest it needs. Protect your sleep like you protect your workouts, diet, and health appointments because without it, everything else starts to fall apart.
This is the beginning of a deep dive I want to do on sleep. I believe the importance of it is being slept on!
