Summer Is Not a Season. It’s an Opportunity.

Sunshing over the ocean.

Summer Is Not a Season. It’s an Opportunity.

There is something magical about summer in New England.

The days are longer. The sun is warmer. The kids are out of school. The golf courses are packed. The beaches are busy. The trails are calling.

After months of cold weather, darkness, and being cooped up indoors, summer arrives and suddenly everyone wants to move again.

And that’s a good thing.

Because movement is one of the most powerful things you can do for your health.

At Harrington Family Chiropractic, we spend a lot of time talking about spinal health. But the truth is, spinal health isn’t really about your spine.

It’s about your life.

Your spine is simply the vehicle that allows you to live it.

Summer Reminds Us What Health Is Really For

Many people think about their health only when something hurts.

Their back goes out.

Their neck gets stiff.

Their shoulder starts barking at them.

Then health becomes important.

But that’s looking at health backwards.

The real purpose of health isn’t avoiding pain.

It’s creating freedom.

Freedom to walk the beach with your spouse.

Freedom to play nine more holes because you’re having a great round.

Freedom to chase your kids through the backyard.

Freedom to hike a trail without wondering whether your back will cooperate.

Freedom to say “yes” when opportunities show up.

Summer has a funny way of exposing this truth.

Because summer is filled with opportunities.

And opportunities are only valuable if your body can take advantage of them.

The Built For 80 Mindset

One of the core ideas behind Built For 80 is simple:

Don’t just build a body for today.

Build one for decades from now.

Most people don’t wake up at age 70 and suddenly become unhealthy.

The process starts much earlier.

It starts when we stop moving.

It starts when we convince ourselves we’ll get back in shape “someday.”

It starts when we begin accepting limitations that shouldn’t be there.

The good news?

The opposite is also true.

Every walk matters.

Every workout matters.

Every healthy meal matters.

Every effort to take care of your body matters.

The small decisions you make this summer are shaping the person you’ll become in the future.

Your Spine Is the Foundation

Think about almost every summer activity you enjoy.

Walking.

Golfing.

Tennis.

Pickleball.

Swimming.

Hiking.

Yard work.

Playing catch.

Throwing a lacrosse ball.

Running after grandchildren.

What do they all have in common?

Movement.

And movement depends on a healthy spine.

Your spine isn’t just a stack of bones.

It’s the central support system for your body and the protective housing for your nervous system.

When your spine moves well, your body moves well.

When your spine becomes restricted, stiff, or overloaded, everything becomes harder.

You don’t have to be in severe pain to notice it.

Sometimes it’s simply feeling less capable than you used to.

Less energy.

Less mobility.

Less confidence.

Less freedom.

And that’s not what summer is supposed to feel like.

Beware the Weekend Warrior

Every summer, I see the same story play out.

Someone spends most of the winter sitting behind a desk.

Then June arrives.

Suddenly they’re digging holes, moving mulch, playing golf three times a week, kayaking on weekends, and attempting home improvement projects that would make a professional contractor nervous.

Their enthusiasm is admirable.

Their preparation is often questionable.

The problem isn’t activity.

The problem is asking your body to do things it hasn’t practiced doing.

The answer isn’t to stop being active.

The answer is to gradually build capacity.

Move consistently.

Walk daily.

Strength train.

Stay mobile.

Take care of your spine.

Prepare your body for the life you want to live.

Summer Is the Perfect Time to Build Momentum

One of the reasons I love summer is that healthy choices feel easier.

The weather is better.

The days are longer.

Fresh food is everywhere.

People naturally spend more time outdoors.

Use that to your advantage.

Take the evening walk.

Go for the bike ride.

Explore the trail.

Play the round of golf.

Spend time outside with your family.

You don’t need a perfect plan.

You just need momentum.

Small actions repeated consistently create extraordinary results over time.

What Will This Summer Mean?

At the end of every summer, people tend to remember experiences.

The vacation.

The hike.

The beach day.

The family cookout.

The sunset.

Rarely does anyone look back and say:

“I’m really glad I spent all that time sitting inside.”

Summer is short.

Don’t waste it.

Use it as an opportunity to move, grow, explore, and invest in yourself.

Take care of your body.

Take care of your spine.

Build strength.

Build resilience.

Build health.

Most importantly, build a future version of yourself that can continue enjoying summers for decades to come.

Because that’s what Built For 80 is all about.

Not just living longer.

Living better.

Strong today. Powerful at 80.
